Soundtracks To Write By

I’ve run across multiple websites, listing the top 10, 20 or even 100 best this or that. When it comes to music, it is difficult to list the best, isn’t it? I mean, it really is about what the listener enjoys and not everyone is the same.

That being said, one soundtrack that I have enjoyed in 2012:

How To Train Your Dragon (John Powell)

I’d heard his music, and enjoyed listening to Chicken Run (similar to McQueen’s Great Escape) and the first Shrek movie. John Powell really caught my ear on the Bourne Soundtracks (Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum). But in HTTYD, what attracted me most was the bagpipe sound and drumline (reminds me of marching band days). He has at least three main melodies to signify certain aspects of the movie/characters. Woodwinds for the flying sequences (such as the track ‘New Tail’). The main theme involves the entire orchestra and, at times, includes a male choir.  Battle The Green Death makes great use of the bagpipes, drumline and orchestra.
