X is for X-ray, Were Those Vitamins? Nay.

zlcr3yavl30v4sihyu5bHave you seen the canine x-rays showing the weird and crazy things dogs have eaten? The first one I ever saw is pictured here. See the alien? I believe they had to operate to remove the alien. They would have let it pass, if not for the arms/hands posing a danger. There have been other x-rays: dog who ate 30+ socks, iguana that ate Barbie’s banana, and so on.

And now to my story…

My mom was due to see her doctor and undergo an x-ray, most likely following her hip surgery. After the x-ray film was processed, the doctor brought it in to review with her. He was chuckling as he entered the exam room. No doubt this puzzled my mom. What was so funny? He placed the film on the light box, flicking on the light to illuminate what was so amusing.

There, near her right hip, was the small shape of a starfish.

What we suspect this is what happened…starfush

My mom had received a bracelet as a keepsake gift from her sister. The chain was full of various sea-life themed charms. She’d often wear it, but had recently caught it on something, breaking part of it. In order to keep everything together, she’d placed the charms and bracelet in a small bag.

Prior to the x-ray appointment, she’d been in a hurry. Preferring to recycle rather than use a new bag, she’d dumped her bracelet pieces onto the bathroom counter and placed her 20-million vitamins inside to take during the day.

Okay, I exaggerate. 3 million 🙂

She was so used to taking a handful of pills at one time (both large and small), swallowing them in one or two groups that she never noticed the unnecessary addition. Obviously, she missed it when she’d empty out the bag, that one little charm had remained behind. So the little starfish joined the sea of vitamins in a new journey.

Her doctor told her it would be fine and, if it was important enough to her, she could (ahem) “sift” for the next few days.

  1. Wow. And just think, if she hadn’t had the x-ray, she might have never known.

I am a nurse and I have seen some “interesting” x-rays over my career! Some are not fit to share. That little alien looks just like the ones my son just brought home from New Mexico to give the kids as souvenirs of his trip.
