My Confession…

Reposting in honor of our “first date” anniversary. I don’t do Valentine’s day. 😉

My husband continues to tell me it is time I admit to our first date. Since I love him….relic

As I may have noted in previous posts, my second official job was working for a retail computer software store. Yes, I was the only girl working there. Anyway, I had also mentioned my laziness. I hated looking up sku numbers to obtain product information or pricing. It really wasn’t that difficult to do. I just had to walk maybe 10-15 feet to the back office, log into the system and type in the title of the product. Easy, but I refused to do it. Instead, I discovered how helpful the store in a neighboring city was. Even their manager, Keith (I think was his name), was very helpful. But unlike Keith, the rest of the remaining male employees were actually single.

Of all of them, I spoke to two most often. I’d say I probably called their store at least once a day. And, when I was on the phone, they’d manage to hook me into conversation for a short while. A month or so later, I found myself curious about what they looked like and so on. I inquired about one guy, but the guy I asked (Michael) stated I wouldn’t like him because he had a fro and :::::censored to protect the innocent?:::::

One evening, after we had closed down the store registers, Michael and I continued to converse much to the annoyance of his coworker. Suddenly, his coworker grabbed the phone and said, “Hello. Honey, what is your phone number? He’s gonna call you back once he gets home, okay?”

Uh…all right. So I gave my number to that guy who was in no way interested in me. He handed it over to Michael and that evening we continued our conversation. Phone calls gradually grew longer as we learned we had more and more in common. I’ll spare him the one question I asked and the answer he gave. Hilarious, but embarrassing for him.

February 10th rolls around and he wants to know if I’d like to go see a movie. I agree and he comes by to pick me up. Keep in mind, I am not thinking this is a date, but rather two coworkers going out to see a movie. *sigh* He brought a rose, drove, paid for dinner and the movie. Fine, fine, it was a date. But at the time I didn’t see it as such!!

I remember as if it were yesterday…..he wore a black leather jacket and drove a Grand Prix (at the time it seemed like a nice car…ha, boy was I wrong!). He gave me a single red rose, no thorns. (cue collective “aawww”) We went to Claim Jumper for dinner. I spent most of that time stabbing the rounded floating ice cubes with my straw, trying to spear them in one shot. Then, we went to see the movie…the one based on the book that brought us together, the first thing that I believe we found we had in common. Isn’t it romantic?

04f24-the2brelic2b252819972529The first movie we saw was Relic. Definitely romantic, no? No.

For those not familiar with Relic, it is a horror movie based on the book of the same title….loosely based. This was the second time I had seen the movie and that stupid cat still startled me.

At any rate, the first thing that Michael and I found we had in common was our fondness for the book, Relic, and the character, Pendergast. That fondness has not changed…for the book, the character, the authors or each other.

So, here it is, over fifteen years 20 years (?!) since that date, and we are married with two kids, plus a dog.

Thank you Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child for indirectly bringing us together (ok….I might be giving you too much credit there, but the book is good).

Meeting the person you will spend the rest of your life with isn’t easy. Common interests are all important to establishing that connection. I’m glad you found each other, and through one of my favorite books, Relic, by my favorite authors, Preston and Child.

I stalled on White Fire and haven’t caught up yet. He keeps bugging me to get going, that it gets better, if I can just get through White Fire. I need to find him a Pendergast support group in the meantime. lol
