Assume makes an…

Has a teacher (or parent) ever said that assume makes an (cough) out of u and me?

The first time around was an “ah, I see what you did there”. After that, it was mainly followed by an eye roll.

But assuming anything can be dangerous (or just plain dumb). I got a chuckle last year after catching myself in one of those stupid assumptions. I wasn’t serious about it, but the thought did pop in my mind.

Our son’s friends come from a variety of ethnicities from Caucasian, Hispanic, Korean and African-American. At least, those are the ones that I know of. At any rate, most of the kids are typical middle schoolers, slackers and goof-offs, just like my son. But when he told me his Korean friend was in the band with him, I thought “Great!” Not just because he had a friend with him in the same class, but that he had someone from a family background that would push him to practice and take music seriously. Eh…except that the kid did nothing but screw around in class. Wait a minute…

I just assumed that he would take it seriously because of his ethnicity. Then again, I sometimes assume my son has put on deodorant because I’ve told him repeatedly only to later regret not double checking. So please forgive my assumptions as they are sometimes based on personal experience from my past, but aren’t necessarily relevant to the present.

We all make assumptions. From people to pets. The world will tell us that we’re bad and terrible people for doing so. But aren’t they making assumptions about us? A little patience and understanding go a long way. No one seems to have either these days.

I assumed my cheeseburger came with cheese, my iced tea with ice.

Don’t assume that I want to watch The Bachelor. Ask. Please ask, because I will say “No”.  🙂

Work assumes that I’m highly professional and easy going. They have no clue about my temper. Shhhhh

The IT department assumes I know nothing, even though I articulate my problem clearly. Instead, they always ask, “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” Wow, why didn’t I think of that?

I assume the spider on the wall is plotting to kill me and therefore must be snuffed out of existence.

What silly things have you assumed?

I assume you must be referring to someone else,
because I would never make an assumption.

I assumed my son’s 8th grade teachers would be professional…silly me.

Ouch. And here I thought I was the only parent annoyed with middle grade teachers. I assumed there would be consistency. Boy, was I wrong!
