When the Going Gets Tougher and Tougher…

When the going gets tough writing the story, how do you keep yourself writing to the end? If you have not started the writing yet, why do you think that is and what do you think could help you find your groove and start?

I’d love to learn the secret of writing, even when the going gets tough and life becomes overwhelming. Id I think about it, I’m doing that with work write now. Despite whatever is going on around me, I push to accomplish what I need to each day at work. Perhaps writers can apply that mindset when it comes to writing.

Eat the frog.

First time I heard this expression I was confused. Why would anyone want to eat a frog? In my mind, it was a live frog too.

For me, thinking of it rather as “eat your vegetables first” works better. Get the unpleasant or more difficult tasks done first.

With work, this is true. By the end of the day, I’m mentally exhausted. I need something that requires a little less brain activity.

So what would that entail for writing?

For me, probably editing. LOL. I hate editing. But if I have nothing written down yet, then it would be chapter 1…maybe 2….also probably 3…

Enjoy the Research

There were times when researching various topics felt time consuming. After all, I should be writing! But I found the more I read up on the subjects that would take center stage in my novel, the more enjoyment I had. I learned things, which to me is fun. And that ended up translating into my writing once I felt more confident in that particular subject.

For example, my characters lived on a galleon ship. How many masts does it have? Where’s the captain’s quarters? Where does the crew eat and sleep? All while research, I was able to imagine my characters in those areas. And that provided inspiration for writing.

Write! Write like the Wind!

Sometimes inspiration hits at the crazies times. I’ve written on napkins at a restaurant. On notepads in my bag while I’ve been at the doctor’s office. When it hits you, block out the voice of doubt that says “this is garbage” and just write. You never know what you’ll end up with. It could be all pure gold (hahaha, right), some of it might be deleted, or parts might spark even more ideas. So make sure you have a napkin, paper towels, or I guess a notepad would work, and write!

Now for those that have found the magical secret to writing daily, please share with me.

I’ll trade you – I enjoy editing but hate the first draft.

I’m definitely taking “eat the frog” away from this. That’s new to me! I get the thinking behind it though.
